National Alliance on
Mental Illness
From its inception
in 1979, NAMI has been dedicated to improving the lives of individuals and families
affected by mental illness.
http://www.stampoutstigma.net/
Stamp Out Stigma is a consumer driven advocacy and educational
outreach program designed to make positive changes in the public perception of
mental illness and inform the community about the personal, social, economic and
political challenges faced by people living with mental illness. Founded by
Carmen Lee.
www.bringchange2mind.org/
1 in 6 adults and almost 1 in 10
children suffer from a diagnosable mental illness. Yet, for many, the stigma
associated with the illness, can be as great a challenge as the disease itself.
This is where the misconceptions stop. This is where bias comes to an
end. This is where we change lives. Because this is where we Bring Change
2 Mind.
BringChange2Mind.org is a not-for-profit organization created by
Glenn Close, the Child and Adolescent Bipolar Foundation
(CABF), Fountain House, and Garen and Shari Staglin of IMHRO (International Mental
Health Research Organization).

Traffickers use various techniques to instill fear in victims and
to keep them enslaved. Some traffickers keep their victims under lock and key.
However, the more frequent practice is to use less obvious techniques
including:
- Debt bondage - financial obligations, honor-bound to satisfy debt
- Isolation from the public - limiting contact with outsiders and making sure
that any contact is monitored or superficial in nature
- Isolation from family members and members of their ethnic and religious
community
- Confiscation of passports, visas and/or identification documents
- Use or threat of violence toward victims and/or families of victims
- The threat of shaming victims by exposing circumstances to family
- Telling victims they will be imprisoned or deported for immigration
violations if they contact authorities
- Control of the victims' money, e.g., holding their money for
"safe-keeping"
The Administration for Children and Families (ACF), within the
Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is responsible for federal programs
that promote the economic and social well-being of families, children, individuals,
and communities.

Author Teresa LeYung-Ryan says: “Domestic violence
is terrorism at home.”
Are you worried that a friend, coworker,
neighbor, or family member may be in an abusive relationship? And, who is
protecting the children?
DID YOU KNOW?
An estimated 1.3 million women are victims of physical assault by an intimate
partner each year.
-
85% of domestic violence victims are women.
-
Historically, females have been most often victimized by someone they
knew
-
Females who are
20-24 years of age
are at the greatest risk of nonfatal intimate partner violence.
-
Most cases of domestic violence are never reported to the
police.

"I am always
inspired by students and their stories when I'm invited to speak candidly about my experiences as a
child-witness to domestic violence (a long time ago but never forgotten). I was a girl who felt helpless, ashamed, angry, and guilty.
Then I found a way to help the
girl-in-my-heart. Through the characters in my
novel, Love Made of Heart, I encourage survivors of violence and
witnesses to violence to find and fortify their own voices through writing."
