Left Coast Writers® presents Carol Sheldon
Carol Sheldon's new book A Sleuth in Sausalito takes place in California during the wild and free-living days of Sausalito. Poets, painters and philosophers dotted this artsy town, as well as a community of people living on houseboats. The river rats vs. the hill people continue an ongoing battle. After ten years of not knowing what happened to her mother when she disappeared, Gwen Harris is notified that recently discovered remains might be those of her mother. Leaving the University of Michigan to find out what she can in Sausalito, where her mother disappeared, Gwen begins a long and arduous journey of discovering what happened, and who is responsible. Her trust in several people is shattered by secrecy, betrayal and deception. She begins to feel she can trust no one. Ultimately, she must decide who her real friends are, and who she will be able to forgive. Carol Sheldon is the author of Mother Lode and Driven to Rage. Sheldon studied at the University of Michigan, where she earned a BA and MA in creative writing and education. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

· What is Coach Teresa’s definition of a writer’s platform?
“Making your name stand for something—to attract targeted consumers—who are likely to buy what you have to sell.”
· Why does a writer need to promote? Wouldn’t an agent or the publisher handle that?
· Aren’t platforms only for “how to” books?
· I write fiction; I have received awards; wouldn’t great writing speak for itself?
· How much does it cost to build my writer’s platform?
· I’m an introvert. Can I build my platform without having to appear in person?
· What is branding?
· Why do I need fans before my book is published?
· Which is the “better” route – find an agent who will find the publisher OR find the publisher myself OR be my own publisher?
· Coach Teresa, your workbook is Build Your Writer’s Platform & Fanbase In 22 Days Why 22 days?

National Association of Memoir Writers (NAMW)
We have declared 2012 The Year of the Memoir, and in our first event of the year, we’re going to plant seeds to help you envision yourself as a successful published author and take steps to build your audience—your platform—as it’s called by agents and publishers.
Our Roundtable Discussion leader this month is Teresa LeYung Ryan, author of Love Made of Heart and Build Your Writer’s Platform & Fanbase In 22 Days. Teresa will talk with us about ways to create success in your writing life—especially the specifics of creating that foundation of potential audience that will help you get published and sell your book. Be prepared to tell us what your book is about and think about who your audience will be.
Whether
you’re pitching your memoir to agents or you want to be your own publisher, the thing that gives you the
competitive edge is a platform that attracts fans before and after publication.
Coach Teresa’s definition of
platform: “Making your name stand for something—so you attract targeted consumers who are likely to buy what
you have to sell.”
Step 1 “What are you selling?” Your literary products—articles, columns, stories, poems, essays, speeches, scripts, books. Your memoir and anything connected to it like a blog, article, poem or essay are your products which deliver ideas, stories, and themes. Being published means that we plan to share these ideas, we are putting them out into the world so others can find out about them, and so our ideas can enrich their lives.
Step 2 “Making your name stand for something”–the “something” is the subject matter, the issues and themes in your writing. You will become identified and known for what you write about, what you stand for, and the topics and ideas your work represents. Publishers, agents, and consumers look for continuity in your name and the “brand” that you are building.
Step 3 “Targeted consumers?” They are the readers who want to know about your subject matter and themes, and are invested with reasons to read what you write—to learn, to enjoy, and to be inspired. They need your work, there is something you have to offer that will change their lives.
Coach Teresa LeYung-Ryan will lead our discussions to help you link steps 1, 2, and 3.
Teresa LeYung-Ryan has helped over 1,000 writers take steps to further their careers.

Kate Farrell is looking forward to the Sonoma County Book Festival and to sharing a booth with two wonderful colleagues, Teresa LeYung Ryan and Margie Yee Webb, from CWC & WNBA. Kate will be showcasing a new anthology she’s edited, Wisdom Has a Voice: Every Daughter’s Memories of Mother. With this anthology Kate conveys the wisdom of our mothers and the meaning daughters bring to this unique and deeply bonded relationship—through memoir. She is very excited that some of the local authors in the anthology will be reading on the Readers Circle stage in the Redwood Village, sponsored by the Redwood Branch of CWC. Visit www.wisdomhasavoice.com for more stories, blog posts, and other resources. |
Teresa LeYung-Ryan says: "Special thanks to Kate Farrell, Ana Manwaring, Linda Loveland Reid and everyone at Redwood Writers! I'm so happy to return to the Sonoma County Book Festival this year, sharing a booth with Kate Farrell & Margie Yee Webb (two of my favorite colleagues from Women's National Book Association and California Writers Club) and showcasing my new workbook Build Your Writer’s Platform & Fanbase In 22 Days. Maxine Hong Kingston, the author who had inspired me to write my novel, will be there too! I use my novel Love Made of Heart to inspire adult children of mentally ill parents to speak openly about the stigmas and find resources for their families. Maxine plays a huge role in my workbook as well. Can't wait to see her and be with all fellow literacy advocates. I love helping fiction & nonfiction authors attract agents, acquisition editors, publishers, readers, and media attention before and after publication. Please visit my blog http://writingcoachteresa.com for more resources. My motto: Reach out, not stress out, when pursuing your dreams."

Margie Yee Webb is honored to be at the Sonoma County Book Festival with colleagues Kate Farrell and Teresa LeYung Ryan, fellow members of CWC & WNBA. Margie is author/photographer of Cat Mulan’s Mindful Musings: Insight and Inspiration for a Wonderful Life, a gift book for cat lovers and their finicky friends! “Through my book, I promote pet awareness and encourage people to make a difference in the lives of cats and other companion animals.” says Margie. She adds, “With the photographs of my cat Mulan complemented with words of wisdom, I bring people joy, smiles, and laughter. As a member of organizations that supports writers and books, I encourage everyone to write their stories.” http://www.catmulan.com
Margie is a generous cheerleader for colleagues at California Writers Club, Northern California Publishers & Authors organization, and Women's National Book Association. This year she will be receiving the Jack London Award for her outstanding service to California Writers Club. |
