"Ms. Teresa! Thanks you for visiting us in our class . . . remarkable! I also have your signature in my book
with your dedication, I'll treasure that for the rest of my life, and you will serve as my role model!" a student
Mr. Victor Turks, teacher of Advance Composition ESL at City College of San Francisco, says:
"My students are reading Love Made of Heart. And coming from 'one of
their own,' it’s a book that they can enthusiastically relate to. 'Is it true?' they ask. 'Yes, all
the bad stuff happened,' Teresa LeYung Ryan tells them. The students are all ears. How can someone
write so convincingly and movingly about everyday life? How does one go about getting her ideas and
feelings across in such lucid and dramatic fashion? 'Why, this is just like our own lives,' a
student says during a class discussion of Ms. Ryan’s book.
"My students sense a kinship with Teresa and tell her so in heartfelt welcoming letters written to
her. 'Thanks for being my role model,' one says. 'I thank you for coming to our class and speaking
to us,' another writes. 'What was the hardest thing about learning English?' somebody wants to
know. By offering them the template of her beautifully written English, Ryan holds out hope to
classrooms of ESL students eager to acquire mother-tongue-like proficiency with their speech and
writing. I dare say we’ve come full circle with Love Made of Heart. As a
class, we are better off for having read it, underscoring my personal teaching belief that
high-quality reading can lead to high-quality writing."
